GRC and GFRC are the same material: a thin, strong concrete reinforced with alkali-resistant glass fibres instead of steel. It is one of the most searched façade materials in the Gulf because it lets architects build detailed, lightweight forms that would be impossible or too heavy in solid precast.
GRC full form and meaning
GRC stands for Glass fibre Reinforced Concrete. GFRC (Glass Fiber Reinforced Concrete) is the American name for the same product. In the UK, Europe and the Middle East you will usually hear GRC; in North America, GFRC.
What GRC is made of
A typical mix uses cement, fine silica sand, water, admixtures and, often, a polymer. The key ingredient is alkali-resistant (AR) glass fibre, which survives the alkaline cement environment and gives the material its tensile and flexural strength.
- Spray GRC: fibres added at the spray gun, typically around 4–6% by weight. Used for large, thin cladding panels.
- Premix GRC: fibres mixed in, typically around 2–3%, then poured or vibrated into moulds. Used for columns, capitals, balusters and screens.
Why architects choose GRC
- Thin and light: skins are often 10–15 mm, so panels weigh far less than equivalent solid precast and reduce load on the structure.
- Any shape: curves, domes, cornices and intricate jali patterns are cast from moulds.
- No rusting steel: glass fibre reinforcement cannot corrode, so there is no spalling from rusting rebar.
- Many finishes: smooth white or grey, pigmented, acid-etched stone look, or exposed aggregate.
Where GRC is used
Façade cladding, balcony fronts, slab-edge bands, cornices, columns, domes, window surrounds, parapets, screens, planters, and restoration of traditional Arabic and classical architecture.
Questions & answers
Is GRC the same as GFRC?+
Yes. GRC (glass fibre reinforced concrete) and GFRC (glass fiber reinforced concrete) describe the same material. The names differ by region.
Is GRC strong?+
Yes. The glass fibres give GRC high flexural strength for its thickness. Strength is verified by testing samples for Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Limit of Proportionality (LOP) to BS EN 1170-5.
Can GRC be used outdoors?+
Yes. GRC is widely used for external façades in hot climates such as the UAE.
